Reggae in the Park 2003 (day 1)

October 3rd, 2003

Reggae in the Park Logo

The preparation started for the show at about 8:00 AM. Got ready and picked up my friend Ryan, and left Sonoma for San Francisco at about 10:00. we got there a little before 11, to notice very few people out there, except a lot of high school kids from Sonoma. The one thing I noticed about this festival was the large amount of Sonoma people, which was both a blessing and a nuisance. So we bought our tickets, and went into the festival at about 11:30. Until the show started my friend and I were checking out the vendor booths.

The first band to go on was Groundation.. Their show started off nicely, but by the end was just kind of bland. I've heard rumors of a new album, hopefully they will come heavier with their next album. The next act to perform was Prezident Brown, who managed to turn the show around and really come with a great show. He came up in a Hemp suit, and performed a great set of his tunes. When it was time to finish his set, the crowd response towards the performance made Emcee Spliff Skankin' have to "recall the Prezident" (a political reference to the California recall election that was right around the corner at the time). After the calls for an encore, Prezident Brown played another 30 minutes or so. Then there was a short break. Music between all the sets was provided by the Jah Warrior Shelter Hi-Fi sound, with Selectors Irie Dole and I-ver, who had recently opened the store Wisdom Records in the city (http://www.wisdomrecordssf.com).

The next artist up was the amazing Barrington Levy. he opened with "Murder" and kept the show rocking through Prison Oval Rock, Too Experienced, Under Mi Sensi, Black Roses, Here I come, and many more. During his set I managed to get to the merch table and pick up a Barrington Levy T-shirt. after his set, he was signing shirts at the booth. I had recently broken my wrist a few days before the show, so instead of having my shirt signed I asked Barrington to sign my cast, as I realized that would last longer than a pen on a t-shirt. I still have the cast, where he wrote "Barrington Levy     Get Well Soon 2003" In my opinion, Barrington's set was the highlight of the day. The last act of the day was Steel Pulse. Their set was ok, but not as good as Barrington's. They came on right after a set that was pretty hard to do any better than. They played a lot of their great songs, although it seemed there were some troubles at the soundman's end, including too much treble and too much feedback. except with those technical difficulties their set was a nice way to end the day.
